The iOS app’s settings are accessed from the Profile tab. Settings are organized into logical sections for appearance, Room Mode configuration, security, and account management.

Profile information

The top of the Profile screen displays read-only account details:
FieldDescription
FacilityThe facility you’re currently logged into
RoleYour role (surgeon, nurse, coordinator, device rep, admin)
EmailThe email address associated with your account

Appearance

Control the app’s visual theme:
OptionBehavior
LightForces light mode regardless of system setting
DarkForces dark mode regardless of system setting
SystemFollows the iOS system appearance (default)
Room Mode always uses its own dark palette regardless of this setting. The appearance preference applies to the standard app experience outside of Room Mode.

Room Mode settings

These settings control the voice and display behavior of Room Mode. They are only relevant on iPad.

Voice feedback level

Controls how much audio feedback ORbit provides when processing voice commands:
LevelBehaviorBest for
Full VerbalChime sound + spoken confirmation for every action. ORbit reads back what it recorded.Learning the system, unfamiliar teams
Sounds OnlyChime on success. Spoken feedback only for errors, out-of-order warnings, and confirmation prompts.Experienced teams who want minimal disruption
SilentNo audio feedback. Visual toasts and timeline animations only.Quiet OR environments, personal preference
Sounds Only is a good default for most teams. It provides enough audio feedback to confirm commands without interrupting conversations. Switch to Full Verbal when onboarding new staff.

Voice selection

Choose which text-to-speech voice ORbit uses for spoken feedback:
  1. Go to Profile → Room Mode → Voice Selection
  2. Voices are grouped by type:
    • Siri Voices — Apple’s Siri voices (must be downloaded on your device first)
    • English voices — system voices sorted by quality tier: Premium → Enhanced → Default
  3. Tap any voice to hear a preview sample
  4. Select the voice you want to use
  5. Use Reset to Default to revert to the system default (Samantha Premium)
Siri voices must be downloaded on your iPad first. Go to iOS Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → English and download the Siri voices you want. They’ll appear in the ORbit voice picker after download.Note: Newer “Siri Voice 1-5” voices are not available to third-party apps due to Apple restrictions. The classic named Siri voices (Aaron, Nicky, Martha, Arthur) are available.

Security

Face ID

When your iPad supports Face ID (or Touch ID), you can enable biometric authentication:
  1. Go to Profile → Security → Face ID
  2. Toggle Face ID on
  3. Authenticate once to confirm setup
When enabled:
  • The app prompts for Face ID on every launch
  • If Face ID fails, you can fall back to password entry
  • Disable at any time from the same toggle
Face ID protects app access only. Individual operations (milestone recording, case actions) do not require additional biometric confirmation — they are authorized by the active session token.

Token management

The app handles authentication tokens automatically:
  • Stored in Keychain — tokens are encrypted and protected by iOS security
  • Auto-refresh — tokens refresh 5 minutes before expiry
  • Foreground refresh — if the app was suspended, the session refreshes immediately when returning to foreground
  • Expired session — if the token cannot be refreshed, the app signs out and returns to the login screen

App information

The bottom of the Profile screen shows:
  • ORbit logo
  • App version number (e.g., 1.0.0)
  • Build number

Voice aliasesSupabase databaseFacility-wide, syncs across devices
Settings stored in UserDefaults are local to each device. If a user signs into a different iPad, they’ll need to reconfigure appearance, voice feedback, and Face ID preferences. Voice command aliases are facility-scoped in the database and sync automatically across all devices at that facility.

Device rep settings

Device representatives see a slightly different profile screen:
  • Assigned facilities — list of all facilities the rep is authorized to view cases for
  • Standard appearance, security, and account sections
  • No Room Mode settings (Room Mode is for OR staff, not reps)
